Schedules and Meditation Gave Me Sanity

Time is the most precious commodity in life. It is finite and ephemeral. Most importantly, we never know how much we have. Obviously, people have said this forever. But in my world, it hasn’t been easy managing time. Compulsions are the leech that suck time from productivity and whatever an individual’s ideas of personal success are. Video games and mindless video will keep me from doing anything.

In January, I created a schedule to maximize my time. I had a few goals I wanted to achieve; and so far, I’ve been crushing it.

  1. Up my Social Media Management skills to the next level:
I’ve been taking some Coursera certificates. I’ve completed 1/3 of my currently goals, and I am extremely close on my next one.
  2. Write, Write, Write
When I was a kid, I absolutely loved writing. I continued it through high school and beyond. I fell in love with journalism where I could use my storytelling and creative skills to benefit the community. While in marketing, I get to explore many aspects of good creative storytelling. I get press releases, advertorials, and sales collateral work all the time… But that doesn’t satisfy the itch of creative writing to the level I need. So I make sure I write an hour every morning. I look forward to sharing some of these pieces soon.
  3. Music
I’ve played guitar for many years– too many years to be at the level I am. So I decided to learn more about the fundamentals of music in a way to help elevate my contribution to my current band-Angelus Errare. Music is fun because I have zero disillusions about success or fame. Music is just a creative and cathartic outlet that keeps me connected to the community. But improving my ability has been a blast. I learned a real scale for the first time in January! Goodby punk roots I guess. JK
  4. Passion Projects
I have time scheduled to do passion projects, like this blog and website. This is where I pursue all my photo, video and web desires. I’m super excited about this as I have a video series idea that I will be pushing soon. Hopefully within the next few weeks. This will use video, narrative and interviewing skills. Stay tuned.
  5. Meditation
My life is chaos with all the things I pursue. Noise, noise, noise. But meditation keeps me grounds and focused. Twice a day, and time becomes easy to manage. Without it, I get overwhelmed. Anxiety sabotages me at every chance I give. So I try not to give it a chance. Meditation is a shield, a force field, that helps keep the noise and chaos at bay. Within these personal moments, I am constantly reminded that we must learn how to be quiet and how to suffer to udnerstand and enjoy the world.
