The Secret to Working Under Pressure

I saw a LinekdIn post surveying people if they thought working under pressure was good or not. I found it quite interesting.

In my experience, it depends on the work and guidance–If its in my wheelhouse, then no problem. If a manager tells me we need “something done,” and I can’t even do research beforehand. I am not a happy camper, but I do my best. I find the the best way to work under pressure is to have a game plan, be clever and confident, and use what makes you special to improvise.

In journalism, people feel the pressure of working against the clock non-stop. Eventuality, they get desensitized and build confidence. The seasoned vets are often a bit cocky because…well they are that good. They have proven it daily for years, if not decades.

In marketing, people feel pressure to deliver quality and raise the bar every time they deliver, they tend to always look for improvement and innovation. The vets are good at looking at all the angles and finding the metrics that make sense. they have to innovate and think outside the box. They understand their audiences well and never forget that before delivering.

In music, I rarely felt pressure. I play a song, I entertain and do the best I can. It’s life. Sometimes it happens. Letting anyone down is the worst possible feeling in the world for me. So I’ll practice instead of eat. I’ll run in the cold, just to be ready for stage.

So let’s consider this–Deadline pressure isn’t ever bad as long as it isn’t fear-based.

So let’s consider this–Deadline pressure isn’t ever bad as long as it isn’t fear-based. That distinction is critical for quality and enjoyment. The pressure should be, “can I do the best job possible and deliver better than previous within this window of time.” Not , “can I even get this done.” Fear it is the destroyer of confidence and working for fear-filled individuals is the worst. Like my work and want me to help you? Don’t come at me if you are scared and will project that energy.

Take a deep breath.

Talk it through.

No pressure. We got this.
