A crow on a yellow background

Accidents Make for a Curious Yellow

Accidents. Oopsies, Boners? Yeah, all of those things can actually be super cool in the creative process. As a musician, I will discover many unique melodies by accident. In art, due to my aphantasia, I embrace my serendipitous accidents more and more.

This accident?

I found a yellow I love to go with the existing red. Not much else to that except I never looked for a yellow to go with my red. In fact I wasn’t looking for a new color at all. I was trying to copy the background color for a text box and misremembered the Hex. So instead of my light background red, I found a very awesome yellow that actually pairs quite nice with it. It’s just an accent color, but I love it.

In design, it’s easy to get caught up in perfectly balancing colors with software. It’s like the auto-tune in the music world. It’s great, but perhaps it should be used more to fine tune an idea instead of completely guiding it. I found I’ve been relying on computer generated palettes more and more. That’s fine and fool-proof, but sometimes accidents give us the flavor splash we need.

Cheers to you Yellow #f7f385.

Many great inventions were created by accident–Post It Notes, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Penicillin. So I am never afraid to embrace an accident or a lesson learned.
